Neal left the Falcons’ opener on Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles in the second half with a knee injury and did not return.
Atlanta coach Dan Quinn initially told reporters after the 18-12 loss that Neal’s injury did not appear serious, but will now have to cope without him for the remainder of the year. Backups Damontae Kazee and Jordan Richards could fill the void in his absence if the Falcons do not look to sign a replacement
Neal was selected by the Falcons with the 17th pick in the 2016 draft and has become a key contributor to the Atlanta defense.
He made the Pro Bowl last season, when he registered 113 tackles and an interception.
The Falcons will face the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 action a week on Sunday.
